LOCATION:

Coaches work at their assigned school site 80% of the time, and off-site 20% of the time, with occasional visits to the Partnership office in Downtown LA. School sites are based in Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, and Watts.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools is seeking Elementary Math Coaches to join our mission to improve learning and academic achievement for students in the Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, and Watts communities. Coaches work onsite and partner with one school within our network to provide professional development to teachers, support teachers to develop and implement impactful curriculum in line with Common Core math standards, and collaborate with teachers to use data to improve learning goals and outcomes. Coaches work with the Partnership School Transformation team – including a team of other Coaches – to strategically plan and implement Partnership Academic Team initiatives. The ideal candidate for this position has a background in and love for teaching, including significant experience with elementary math instruction, Common Core, and teacher development. This is a full-time, year-round position.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Curriculum Development & Implementation (40%)

  • Work with Partnership School Transformation and Mathematics teams to develop and execute priority initiatives for math instruction at Partnership schools
  • Develop and oversee implementation of mathematics curricular materials, including curriculum maps, common assessments, technology-connected learning programs, and other tools to support teachers and students in meeting Common Core standards
  • Collaborate with school administration to support effective instruction of Common Core, ensuring systems are in place for the math team to be successful
  • Collaborate with other members of the Partnership Transform and Math Teams to coordinate activities, develop teacher support resources, address issues and concerns, and exchange best practices
 

Teacher Coaching, Training, & Support (40%)

  • Build teacher capacity to implement Common Core math instruction, including utilizing curriculum maps, planning from standards, developing units and lessons that incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy and practices, developing assessments, implementing instructional strategies, and using data to inform instruction
  • Conduct regular classroom observations and facilitate coaching conversations with with the goal of teacher growth and student learning
  • Design and deliver school-specific professional development to support the delivery of math instruction and provide teachers and leaders with instructional resources related to Common Core
  • Lead the development of a team-based, collaborative, and data-centric environment for teachers that is focused on student outcomes
 

Data & Impact (20%)

  • Facilitate data inquiries on an ongoing basis to assess progress and needs of schools, teachers, and instructional initiatives, and support leaders and teachers in analyzing and responding to the data
  • Work with school leaders to plan for and lead data cycles with grade-level or department teams of teachers
  • Maintain trackers for data, coaching, professional development, and other requests from the Sr. Director of School Transformation, Math
 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • A proven record of academic success working with students in historically underserved schools and setting high expectations for teachers and students, including at least 5 years of full-time teaching experience in grades K-6 and 2 years of school leadership experience (coaching, department chair, BTSA coach, peer observer, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree or other advanced degree is preferred; in addition, a degree in mathematics and a teaching credential are strongly preferred
  • Experience designing, leading, and facilitating professional development for adult learners, preferably elementary teachers; knowledge of and experience with adult learning theory is a plus
  • Deep working knowledge of math Common Core state standards, Instructional Shifts for Mathematics, and Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Comfort and skill observing and providing direct feedback to teachers, both written and verbal, that leads to tangible improvement, and demonstrated ability to motivate, inspire, and build strong working and mentoring relationships with adults
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with administrative staff, instructional staff, and support staff
  • Strong analytical and computer skills, including the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative analysis to support decision-making
  • Ability to travel between our network schools in South Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, and Watts
  • Experience with CHRE framework is a plus

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

The starting salary range for external candidates is $92,829-$99,460. The Partnership’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion extends to our compensation practices. Our goal is to ensure that salaries are fair for all staff members who hold many intersectional identities, and we set salaries based on a robust compensation model grounded in consistency and transparency. The exact salary for this position is dependent on the relevant skills and experiences that the candidate brings to the role.
